Exiting the subway at 34th street

That was the last time
I paid attention to the color of my hair
Or worried about the soup
Not if there was soup enough
But from which bowl
Or spice rack riddled kitchen nook
I’d serve it up

Then yesterday
On some midtown street
I lost my way again
And caught myself
Looking for faces
That could not be there
Reflections long since gone

So I imagined one
In an oak-trimmed bar
With rice chex nuts
And sixteen dollar Gins
And for sixteen minutes we pretended
To know each other
Avoiding mirrors
